Sammy Figueroa and Imaginary World

On Oct 23 for 8pm and 10 pm, the famed percussionist and double Grammy nominee Sammy Figueroa will be performing at Scullers Jazz Club with the band that recorded his latest album, “Imaginary World”. This show will be broadcast live on WGBH-FM Boston’s “Live From Sculler’s” series, hosted by jazz personality, the “Dean of Boston Jazz”, Eric Jackson.
Here Eric Jackson Interviews Sammy Figueroa.

The pyrotechnic percussionist and his six-piece band — Grammy-nominated standard bearers of the Latin jazz legacy — celebrate their exciting new album, “Imaginary World.” The band will be with Sammy Figueroa on percussion, Silvano Monasterios on piano, Gabriel Vivas on bass, Troy Roberts on saxophone, Cisco Dimas on trumpet, and Ludwig Afonso on drums. They will be playing the music from the recently released album “Imaginary World” (Savant Records).  Produced by Rachel Faro and Ray Chew, the recording offers a sophisticated blend of Latin jazz, world rhythms and and amazing arrangements.

This highly regarded album has already spent over 14 weeks on the national Jazz Week Chart, including three weeks in the Top Ten. From the rocking “Bittersweet”, the breathtakingly beautiful “He Didn’t Know”, the flowing hypnotic “Mysterious Energy” and the bright perkiness of “Jumping Blue Jay”, which features Brazil’s illustrious guitarist Chico Pinheiro, what makes this music special is how a Latin jazz group combines sophisticated melodies and innovative arrangements with the excitement of complex Latin rhythms.  Sammy stretches out and plays multiple percussion instruments besides, including the African ‘udo’ drum.

“Imaginary World”  featuring Venezuelan composer/virtuosos Silvano Monasterios(piano) and Gabriel Vivas (bass).  The album has a big sound, with modern electronic touches, but what comes across the most is the sense of swing and joy that the players are experiencing.  Anyone who has seen this band live will tell you that they are phenomenal.  These live shows are bound to be exceptional musical events and will offer a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s great musicians interacting with a group of fabulously talented virtuosos.

Don’t miss this very special performance! Oct. 23, 8 and 10 p.m. $30. Scullers. Tickets call 866-777-8932, or online at
